Started in 2020, Apex was founded by Ben Oliva, a certified mental performance consultant (CMPC) and licensed clinical mental health counselor (LCMHC).

Ben Oliva

LCMHC, CMPC

Ben specializes in training athletes and performers of all ages to maximize their potential by teaching evidence-based mental skills and techniques that apply both on and off the field.

EXPERTISE AND EDUCATION

He received his master's degree (M.Ed.) in sport and performance counseling from Boston University and his undergraduate degree in psychology and astrophysics from Williams College. He also has advanced training in:

  • Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Motivational interviewing (MI)

  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)

Ben is a professional member of the American Counseling Association, American Psychological Association, and the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. He has been featured as an expert in the field of mental performance on several podcasts, NBC Productions, and in multiple publications.

EXPERIENCE

In his role at SportStrata, a New York-based consulting group, Ben served as the mental performance coach for the Fordham University and New York University Athletics departments. He also worked with the Baylor Football program and other NCAA teams. Beyond athletics, Ben is a mental performance coach for the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) Mental Performance Initiative and delivers leadership and mental performance workshops for business organizations across the country.

Previously, Ben worked for the mental skills group of the Boston Red Sox and served as an assistant coach at Williams College for the baseball and football programs, where he was also a two-sport varsity athlete. In addition, Ben worked for nearly a decade at a summer camp for children ages 5-12.

While Ben works with people of all ages, he specializes in working with adolescents and young adults on the topics of confidence, anxiety, focus, and emotional control.

PERSONAL

In his free time, Ben enjoys playing sports, hiking with his dog Mocha, and spending time with his friends and family. He has completed the Boston and Los Angeles Marathons and currently competes as an endurance athlete.
